How do store brands stack up? (And a Giveaway!)

A few weeks ago a package arrived at my doorstep filled with baby food:

  •         1 container of store brand formula
  •         9 assorted Puree Pouches
  •         5 assorted Puffs
  •         4 assorted Yogurt Bites

  • It was a very exciting event for my children!  Even though these things are more suited for my infant, the 2, 4, and 6 year old all wanted to try them!  (And they loved sampling the puree pouches.  They are like squeezable applesauce or baby food.)

The fun thing was that every item was a different store brand.  We had Meijer Baby, Target Up and Up, Kroger Comforts, and Walmart Parent's Choice brands represented.  Did you know that all of these store brands are made by the same company?  Perrigo Nutritionals is the company behind many store brands.

    About Perrigo Nutritionals
    ·         Many moms are not aware that they can save up to 50 percent on infant formula by choosing a store brand over a national brand
    ·         Store Brand Formula is nutritionally comparable to the national brands, yet are typically up to half the price, and can save you about $600 a year
    ·         Perrigo Nutritionals is the largest supplier of Store Brand Infant Formula and nutrition products in the world and one of only four companies recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for meeting the strict FDA requirements for safety, nutrition and quality for infant formula-manufacturing in the United States
    ·         Same standards and expertise used to develop infant formula applied to toddler foods
    ·         Toddler foods are appropriately developed for variety of stages of growth and motor skills with quality, nutritional ingredients to create foundation of good nutrition

    Fascinating, huh?!

I also received a copy of “Say Goodbye to Survival Mode: 9 Simple Strategies to Stress Less, Sleep More, and Restore Your  Passion for Life” by Crystal Paine.  I had read about this book on Crystal's blog, moneysavingmom.com, and so I was excited to read it.  It tells her story and gives concrete tips on how to streamline your life.

To give you a flavor of what you'll find in the book:

Crystal Paine’s 5 Money Saving Tips for Families
    Create a Budget
A budget gives you parameters and purpose, it gives you boundaries, and it gives you freedom to live creatively within those boundaries.

    Shop With Cash
When you shop with a credit card (or even a debit card, for that matter!) you can have your budget in your head and you can do the best to stick with it when you check out, but it’s so much easier to go just a little bit over here and there when you’re swiping!

    Plan a Menu
When you have a plan in place for what you’re supposed to be eating each meal and you’ve already purchased the ingredients for those recipes, it’s a lot harder to justify chucking the plan for takeout.

    Use Coupons
Coupons are a great way to save a lot of money on your grocery bill, but they can be hard to keep up with. Clipping, sorting, and organizing coupons takes time — so enter a coupon database! You’ll have access to printable and other coupons currently available and it’s one of the most effective and efficient ways to save money on groceries.

    Buy Store Brands
One way to save a great deal of money on your grocery budget is to learn to like and use a variety of brands. The sooner you can get over being a brand-snob, the more your pocketbook will thank you.
For example, while I breast fed my children, moms who choose to formula feed can save up to 50 percent by switching to store brand formula, which meets the same FDA quality standards as expensive name brands. There are also coupons available at a website - StoreBrandFormula.com (
www.storebrandformula.com).  This one simple change can save moms about $600 a year.

I've been reading through the book, and while nothing is earth shattering, I appreciate the real examples and experiences Crystal shares, as well as methods to overcome the challenges that we all face, like too many things on our to do lists!

I am so excited that one of you will get the chance to try out Perrigo Nutritionals and read Crystals's book!  One luck winner will receive a prize pack just like the package I was shipped.  Good luck!

    Count The Kicks!

Today is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.  I posted about this last year because it is something near and dear to my heart.  Did you know that 1 in 160 babies is stillborn?  But kick counting during the third trimester has been scientifically proven to save lives!

Counting kicks is an easy and free way for to moms to monitor their baby.  Significant changes in your baby’s movement patterns may help identify potential problems with your pregnancy before the baby's heart rate is affected.

You can find out more about the Count the Kicks Campaign through their Facebook page.

    Baby Registry with Babies R Us {and Giveaway!}

We are expecting baby number 4 and couldn't be more excited!  My due date is in mid December, so we're looking forward to having a little Christmas baby to snuggle this winter!

You'd think that after three kids I'd have all the essentials, but I still find things that I feel would be super helpful for a new baby.  Last week I went to Babies "R" Us and created my free baby registry there.  Babies "R" Us is the perfect place to register...they have registry consultants to help you, you can add items in the store (with a handheld scanner) or at home online, they give you idea lists so you don't forget any of the essentials, and when you register in store they give you a cute bag full of samples and coupons (like a $5 off your next $25 purchase!).  And they even gave me a bottle of water to drink as I walked through the store.  Helpful people, those Babies "R" Us employees!

Babies "R" Us is running an awesome promotion now through November 15th.  If you create a baby registry (it's free and easy!) during this time frame you can earn up to $200 back on items purchased off your registry!  How is that for amazing!  You can find out more here

Babies“R”Us is THE leading dedicated baby products retailer, and its registry, to date, has been used by more than 18 million parents and caregivers.

I recently created a baby registry and some of the things I registered for are swaddle blankets, newborn diapers (even though we use cloth having disposables for the first weeks is so helpful with adjusting to a new baby!), a white noise machine, a Moby Wrap (I've heard such good things about these and think having one will be a life saver as I try to keep up with my older kids!), JJ.Cole Bundle Me for our car seat, a Boppy pillow, and some baby washcloths.  My girls came with me to the store and they were both eager to help me choose toys, clothes, and feeding items for the new baby.

If you are expecting your first baby some of the essentials (in my opinion!) are:
    -car seat
    -crib/sheets/blankets
    -diapers! and wipes
    -nursing cover
-bottles (even if you're planning on nursing having a few is helpful!)
    -stroller
-diaper bag (I've never had good luck with the free ones from the hospital- they always break quickly!)
-clothes (we'll be using mostly my son's outgrown baby clothes for this baby so I hopefully won't have to buy much for this new little one.)

Babies "R" Us provided me with a gift card to help me prepare for our baby, and they are generously offering a $50 gift card to one of my readers!  (Sorry, this giveaway is open to US residents only.)  To enter please use the form below.

    Count the Kicks

Did you know that Monday, October 15th is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day?  I was just notified and asked to share this with all of you on behalf of Count The Kicks, a public health campaign that is trying to save babies.

If you are a parent or parent to be you'll want to read this:

    COUNT THE KICKS
    SAVE THOUSANDS OF LIVES
October 15th is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death which includes miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, or the death of a newborn. The National Institute of Health estimates that of the 4 million births a year in the United States, there are 26,000 stillbirths; meaning one in every 160 births results in a stillborn. These statistics can change significantly with your help!

After learning that Norway had dramatically reduced its still birth rates by conducting a public health campaign on kick counting, five Des Moines-area moms, who each lost babies to late-term stillbirth or infant death, launched a statewide public health campaign in Iowa called Count The Kicks in 2009. The campaign was developed to prevent late-term birth complications and stillbirths and urges parents to contact their health care providers immediately if they notice significant changes in their babies’ movements. Scientific studies indicate kickcounting, a daily record of a baby’s movements (kicks, rolls, punches, jabs) during the third trimester, is an easy, free and reliable way to monitor a baby’s well-being in addition to regular prenatal visits.

To learn more about how you can prevent the loss of more lives, join the Count the Kicks movement and spread kick awareness!

Dear family friends of our just lost a little baby to SIDS this month, so this campaign is really hitting home for me.

    It's Baby Food Making Time!

My baby is 7 months old!  How did the past half a year (plus a month) fly by?! I am now in the midst of baby-food making, a stage that I enjoy and dislike at the same time.  I enjoy making my baby's food because it is:
    a) cheaper than buying bottled baby purees
    b) easy to do
    c) as I'm making purees I can mix them into my other kids food too (they haven't noticed the carrots in the smoothie or squash in the spaghetti sauce!)

I dislike making my baby's food because:
    a) it takes time

So this time around I'm trying to simplify and stream line my baby-food making methods.  I give my daughter more from what we eat and make a big batch of purees for the freezer at the same time I'm making dinner.  So far this is working well for us!

    T-Shirt to Infant Dress Refashion

I recently took a t-shirt (one of those free for participating in something shirts) and made it into a summer dress for Joanna.  This was a fun project!

Somethings I learned about sewing with t-shirt (jersey knit) material:
-you don't have to hem everything; jersey doesn't fray!
-jersey does stretch (that can be good or bad!)
-ruffles hide a lot!  (you can't see some of my crooked seems/rough edges because of the cute ruffles)

I didn't follow a tutorial, I just laid out a dress we already had and tried to copy general size and seem ideas.

If you are looking for a tutorial, here are a few I thought looked fun:
-Happy Together: Roses and Ruffles (she shoes how to do the easy ruffles I used)

    -Nap Time Crafters

Safe in The Arms of Love: Book and CD Review

Safe in the Arms of Love: Deepening the Essential Bond with Your Baby is a wonderful book and CD combination designed to help parents and babies connect.  I found lots of information in the book to be helpful, and in line with my beliefs of the importance of parent-child bonding.

Some advice for bonding included this list:
-Touch your baby, skin to skin
    -Massage your baby
-Experience eye contact with your baby
-Sing and Speak in a tender way to your baby
    -Play with your baby

The music CD is wonderful! Relaxing and peaceful, we turned it on as we cleaned up toys before dinner and my three year old wanted to keep it on as we ate!

I think this book and CD set would make a great gift for any expectant parent.  I enjoyed the essays about becoming a mother and father, suggestions on specific ways to bond with your baby, and relaxing music to listen to!

Safe in the Arms of Love: Deepening the Essential Bond With Your Baby is available on Amazon.  (With free Amazon Prime shipping too!)

Parts of the Face with a Balloon

Last week was full of celebrations at our house: my husband finished his three month internship, he graduated with his master's degree, and we celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary!  We blew up some balloons and have been playing with them around the house.

We used permanent maker to draw a face on one balloon for Amy (18 months).  She enjoyed identifying and pointing to the different parts of the face.

    Baby's New Bed

We made this simple baby bed out of an old shoe box.  Baby's blanket is a piece of flannel I serged around the edges so it wouldn't fray and the pillow is something we had around the house.  A simple toy for imaginative play.

Amy's favorite things to do with the bed, besides putting baby to sleep in it?  Pushing it around the floor and climbing in her self.  She barely fits!

    Playing in the Dishwasher

I know that playing in the dishwasher sounds like a strange things to do, but it's not quite as it seems. :) Lately my 14 month old has been enthralled with containers and it just so happens that our dishwasher has a wonderful removable silverware container.

For safety reasons (and because I didn't want her sitting on the door of the dishwasher) I took the container out and set it on the kitchen floor, along with some measuring cups and miscellaneous silverware.

Amy had a blast putting items in each division of the silverware holder and then taking them all out again. This was a fun, easy activity, although I do offer my warning that if you try this at home be aware that your toddler may come crawling to the kitchen whenever dishes are being done looking for something to play with!

Little Ones and the Joys of Containers

I'm not so sure what it is about containers that is so appealing to babies. I recently filled a plastic containers with fridge magnets and lids for my one year old. She can play with it for quite some time simply pulling everything out and then putting it back in (or at least trying to!)
I loved The Activity Mom's idea here, and did a similar thing by putting fabric pieces in a wipes tub. (Does anyone else's children love to pull out all the wipes from the tub?!) This way the wipes are safe and my daughter still gets to pull something out of an extra tub.
